Your Rainbow Profile Picture

IMG_3433-0.jpgThe recent Supreme Court decision on gay marriage has brought about a lot of conversations in social media, such as Facebook.  One of the most popular things to do is to merge your photo with a rainbow photo to show your support of gay marriage.

Here are some questions for a Christian to consider before you start publicly supporting gay marriage.

What scriptures encourage gay marriage?
Our beliefs are proven by our actions. What are your actions saying about scripture?  Is the message you are sending say that your feelings outrank scripture?  If they don’t, then does logic?  Does politics?

Have you actually read the scriptures concerning sexual immorality?  If so, have you studied them?

Homosexuality was considered acceptable in the culture during the time those scriptures were written, and they were still written. As a Christian I encourage you to make sure you are allowing God’s word to influence your beliefs, and not allowing your emotions, beliefs, or culture to influence how you interpret scripture.

How will your argument for gay marriage work when others use it for legalizing: polygamy, pedophilia, bestiality or adultery?
Do those people have the same rights as homosexuals?  If marriage isn’t between just a man and a woman, then why not a group of people?  Why should age matter?  A girl can get birth control and an abortion at age 13 without parental consent. Why not get married?  What about a 13 year old boy and a 25 year old male?  Is that still wrong?

Do your arguments against the things you still disagree with still hold validity, or did we just open the flood gate to legalizing all forms of sexual immorality? From my seat, the liberal argument used to support gay marriage will be just as strong when used for other forms of sexual immorality.

Is it your guilty conscious that keeps you out of the fight?
Homosexuals consistently talk about “not throwing stones” not judging” and “loving your neighbor.”  In truth, they often misquote these scriptures. Jesus actually judged the adulteress woman’s sexual conduct as sin when he offered her grace and forgiveness and said, “Go and sin no more.”

Are you rationalizing other people’s sin because you haven’t confessed yours?  Do you use comparison with others behavior as your measuring stick of right and wrong, or do you use scripture? Yes we are all sinners, but that doesn’t rationalize participating in, condoning or celebrating sinful behavior.

Confess your sin. “Get the log out of your own eye so you can see more clearly to help your brother get the speck out of his.”  That is what Jesus advised.

I believe in the separation of church and state, so Christianity can’t influence politics!
Please, please research this concept, people!

Separation of Church and State is NOT in the constitution. It was written in a letter from Thomas Jefferson to a woman who was worried that the state would choose one Christian denomination over another as the state religion.

Christianity was a huge part of government in the founding of and the first century of this country. The pilgrims weren’t concerned about other religions worshipping freely among them.  They wanted a place they could practice Christianity without the catholic church oppressing them!

The intention of the concept of Separation of Church and State was that government cannot dictate a religion that everyone must follow, or restrict the freedom of religion. It had nothing to do with the church not being involved in politics.

Democracy is a group of people’s set of beliefs influencing government!  If homosexuals can promote anti-Christian beliefs, then Christians can promote Christian beliefs. To believe otherwise is hypocritical.

WWJD?
What Would Jesus Do?  Good question. Since Jesus told the woman caught in adultery to “go and sin no more,” what do you think he would have said to a homosexual caught in homosexual behaviors?  Let’s look at some options.  In your opinion, would Jesus:

  1. Give the homosexual a high five?
  2. Argue with the religious zealots that homosexuality is really ok?
  3. Kill the homosexual?
  4. Offer grace and forgiveness, and tell the homosexual to “go and sin no more”?

If you chose number 4, you are correct. Based on the consistency of Jesus’ behavior and teachings, number 4 is the most accurate answer.  As Christians we must follow Jesus. So, do what Jesus did; call it sin, offer the way to grace and forgiveness, and encourage them to sin no more.

Use your influence wisely!
In the parable of the talents Jesus warns us that we will be judged on how we used the resources God gave us.  Your influence is a part of those resources.  When you post a rainbow colored profile picture, what message are you sending?  How are you using that influential resource that God has allowed you to have?

You have every right to choose to send whatever message you want to send to your friends and the rest of the World Wide Web.  Just remember, your rationalizations now will never negate the future consequences of your actions.  The consequences to actions are already set; many scriptures tell us so. Therefore, choose wisely so you don’t face negative ones.

As a Christian, I implore you to prayerful consider these things. Someone’s salvation and eternity may just be in the balance.  You are more influential than you realize.  Use your powers for good. Better yet, use them for God.
